Tobacco ban

#4 Ban the Sale of Tobacco in SFUO Businesses

Should the SFUO ban the sale of tobacco products from any SFUO businesses, as soon as possible?

The “Vote YES” referendum committee’s platform

Over 1,500 students petitioned to have this question on the ballot, let’s take it one step further by voting YES!
The SFUO currently sells harmful tobacco products in at least one business funded by you, the students. This initiative hopes to shut the door on big tobacco companies and take a stand as a student body.
Why? …Why not?
It just makes sense
• We don’t need to convince you that tobacco products are harmful. Complete no-brainer. For our student union to run fundraisers to fight cancer and other diseases, does it really make sense to support tobacco companies?
Put principle before convenience
• Recently, the SFUO ended its exclusivity deal with Coca-Cola is now planning to ban bottled water in the Pivik. These are examples of how our student businesses should reflect our students’ values.
Let’s send a message
• Together we have the chance to say to big tobacco companies, loud and clear: “not on our campus!” Let’s show them that our students are too smart and too principled to be taken advantage of.

I’m supporting this. Sure, some will argue that students can just as well go to MAC’s and get tobacco… and thus our pivik loses out on some profit.
Think of the inneficiencies associated with the new regulations that are required for selling tobacco products. The employee behind the counter has to turn around, get the cigarettes out of a closed up shelf… and this just takes time. Meanwhile, the pivik line is getting longer, discouraging students from entering and possibly buying a product that has a higher profit margin such as a chocolate bar or a drink or something…

Getting rid of tobacco in the pivik is also good in terms of increasing the efficiencies of the Pivik and therefore, profit margins may be up!
